Tsunami 18 Black at Nationals - Days 1,2
6/27/2008 — Zach
After years of hard work culminating in a great 18's season and a few qualifying tournament finishes, 18 Black finally had our time on the court at USAV Nationals.
We came in seeded in the middle of our 6 team pool, and had 3 tough matches the first day. Success was elusive, and our customary team chemistry was not with us as we stayed close in all games but were unable to get a win. The bright spots were that we finished with a very respectable 80% point differential, meaning that our matches against Performance (Colorado), A.C.E. (Ohio), and Kaepa FC (Wisconsin, coached by former Tsunami coach Joe Goodson) were all very closely contested. Another strong point was that we took the A.C.E. team to 3 games.
Day 2 started out with a well-balanced, dominant performance over Low Country (South Carolina). This set up for a great match with Virginia Elite. In another very close contest, we lost the first game 25-20 and responded well in the second game with a confident 25-18 win. The third game was as expected, staying close all the way to the finish. At 11-11, a poorly time streak of bad luck finished that game in favor of Virginia. Our pool play record ended at 1 win and 5 losses over the first two days, which is totally unrepresentative of our level of capability and performance.
We are now heading into the re-seeded pools, where we plan on regrouping and continuing our positive momentum to a strong finish through Saturday and Sunday. Expect another update on the site at the end of Saturday's competition.

Tsunami End of the Season Picnic
5/16/2008 — Wendy
When: Sunday May 18th, 2:00pm-5:00pm - Annual End of the Season Picnic
Where: The Bedford School field
Activities: grass court volleyball, snack food, fun, friendships!
Special Snack Food Arrangements: Introducing the "Taste of Tsunami" Festival
Taste of Tsunami Festival
- One of the best things about going to Tsunami tournaments is all the great food to be sampled at the infamous "team table". So, this year Tsunami invites each team to share some of their favorite tournament snacks with the club in the first (hopefully annual) "Taste of Tsunami Festival"
- each team will be responsible for providing 2-3 of their favorite tournament dishes/snacks for the picnic. Each dish should be enough to feed one team (10-12, hungry, ppl)
- Your team mom will be contacting you to coordinate who will bring what dishes
- This is your chance to share that all time great veggie dip, pasta salad, quesadillas etc... tournament treat! I can't wait to taste it all!!
- Tsunami will provide bottled water and all paper products and utensils for the Festival

Tsunami Volleyball Club shares love of the game with Special Olympians
5/15/2008 — Wendy
Last Saturday, May 10th, Tsunami Volleyball teamed up with the Atlanta Alliance on Developmental Disabilities (AADD) to host the Special Olympics Volleyball Invitational. This event marked the third year that Tsunami has provided volunteers at the annual invitational held by the AADD. Over 40 Tsunami players, coaches, and parents volunteered last weekend to help run the event that draws Special Olympics teams from all over Georgia. Thank you to all who volunteered - it was an outstanding act of service to our community!
14 Black is Headed to Nationals!
5/11/2008 — Wendy
Then, on Sunday, there was no slowing this BIG wave from washing away all obstacles on their quest for a bid to Nationals. Outside hitters Katelyn Wienbarg and Brea Sherman dominated at the net against TCA 141 to advance the team to the quarter-finals where they faced a tough SKY 141 team. In an exciting two game match the Tsunami wave was victorious, advancing the girls to the semi-finals and cementing their bid to the National Tournament!
But the day wasn't over yet! Tsunami faced the strong Impact 141 team in the semi-finals. Outstanding passing and defense by Libero Maddy Gordon combined with precision setting from Allie MacFall and Alex Christopher to earn the girls yet another victory in an already impressive weekend and send them to the finals! Going into the Championship match with a 6-0 record, Tsunami faced the solid A-5 141 squad. In a hard fought match Tsunami couldn't find their rhythm and lost their first match of the tournament.
"All the pieces just came together for us this weekend. I've never seen the girls play so well, both individually and as a team," said Coach Wendy Weaver. "I'm so proud of them and so excited for them to have the opportunity to play at Nationals!" Region Runner-Up, Tsunami 14 Black makes Tsunami history by being the first Tsunami team in their age bracket and second Tsunami team ever (congrats 18 black!) to win a National bid to USA volleyball's Junior Championships in Dallas, Texas. Congratulations girls we're so proud of you! Best of luck in Dallas!
Tsunami 18 Black Qualifies... Again
5/11/2008 — Sarah
Tsunami 18 Black qualified for Nationals once again this past weekend at Regionals. The team had a great weekend dropping only one match (2 games) all weekend. They breezed through pool play on Saturday defeating A5 18 April, Sting 18 Gold, and Williamson County Select 181. Sunday was more of the same, confidently defeating On Court 181, Impact 18 Pink, and Birmingham Juniors 181 before meeting A5 18 Bob in the finals. 18 Black played a tough match against 18 Bob, but a couple of poorly timed errors would bring an end to the match and the undefeated record. Tsunami lost to 18 Bob in 3 games (18-25, 25-17, 10-15). The loss gave them a 2nd place finish and another bid to Nationals. What a great season for these girls. Dallas here we come!
Big Wave places 2nd in The Clash
5/9/2008 — Zach
Diane Humphreys, Jill Steinwedel, and Maya Mitchell placed second in The Clash outdoor volleyball tournament in Lexington, SC, sponsored by the Columbia Volleyball Club. Their name, easily determined, was "Big Wave." It was a three-on-three grass tournament that endured heat, wind, rain, thunder, lightening, and then humidity!
Big Wave finished pool play with 7 game wins and 1 loss (as the rain was starting). This put them into the Gold Bracket for playoffs. After two playoff wins (each was one game to 21), they moved into the finals against a Club South Team. The Club South team of two 15-year-olds and one 14-year-old were highly skilled volleyball players whose club team had already won a Bid to Nationals. Big Wave went down in the first game and rallied in the second, led most of the game, and finally went down 21-19. What a match! Several teams who had lost to Big Wave during pool play and the playoffs stayed to cheer the team through the Finals.
It was a long, hot day, but the girls were ecstatic. Considering this was the first time these players had ever played outside, and the fluctuating weather conditions, this was an awesome finish. The second prize, in addition to tournament t-shirts, was $100 to the club of your choice. So, of course, Tsunami will be receiving a $100 check courtesy of the girls.
What a day!
Terakka Walker Commits to Tennessee State University
5/6/2008 — Sarah
Congratulations to Terakka Walker, Tsunami 18 Black, for committing to play at Tennessee State University. Terakka has contributed greatly to the success of the 18 Black team this season, and will no doubt provide a big contribution to the Tennessee State University Tigers. Congratulations!
13 Blue wins the Tri-Counties Southern Fire Tournament
5/1/2008 — Betsy
Tsunami 13 Blue played in the Tri-Counties Southern Fire tournament this weekend. We traveled to Smyrna only to find out that the gym had overbooked and volleyball was going to have to find somewhere else to play. After Tri-Counties was unsuccessful in finding a gym, Coach Betsy called and secured Landmark for the tournament. The team went 2-1 in pool play losing only to Tri-Counties 131. We met Tri-Counties again in the finals and easily won the first game but struggled in the second. We were down 17-24 when Maya Page stepped back to serve. She was nothing short of awesome serving to win the game 26-24. We are looking forward to Regions next weekend. Go Big Blue!!!

18 Black is headed to Nationals!!!
4/14/2008 — Jeff
I usually like to mention key players or events that played a key role in a team's victory. In this instance, every single player made huge contributions to the team's success. It almost seems unfair to mention Leigh had a perfect hitting percentage in the Semis and almost the same in the Finals without mentioning the team wouldn't have been in the game without Kayla and Casey playing unstoppable defense. Elyse and Alexis are so huge in the middle that opponent middles have to respect them. This really opens it up for outsides Terakka, Morgann, and Lia to bomb the ball. LOTS of balls bounced way in front of the defense. That means these girls were WAY in the air and really hammering the ball down. Stephene and Ashleigh passed extremely well and played great defense. Kendall ran a fantastic offense, constantly giving her hitters opportunities against single blockers. That's the sign of a good setter!
I spent most of the Semis and Finals talking to college coaches. I love that I missed much of the matches. I'm so proud of where our club is headed. Thank you all for being part of the Tsunami family and thank you to 18 Black for an exhilarating weekend!
There is also a good article on prepvolleyball.com about the Big South and our 18's for those who subscribe to their site.

Tsunami 17-black Wins 18-Power Chattanooga Tournament
2/4/2008 — Charles, Gena, Tad

Tsunami 17-Black went undefeated to win the 18-Power Chattanooga tournament. After cruising through pool play, the team had to win three tough matches against Williamson County Select 18-1 (won in 3), TEVAA 18-1 (won in 2), and Choo Choo CIty 18-1 (won in 3) in order to bring home the championship. The team showed tremendous heart and mental toughness in battling from behind against Williamson County and Choo Choo City. The team was led by Chandler Ambrester's powerful attacks and Katie Brigg's blocking and attacking. Chandler, who was coming off of an early season injury, really stepped up big in her first tournament of the year. Katie's hard work in blocking and transition paid off as she came through with huge blocks and critical kills all day long. It was a great team effort, and one which sets the standard for upcoming tournaments.
Tsunami 17-Black, also known as Team ET (for their love of Steven Spielberg movies, and for the ExtraTerrestrial nature of their play), can be characterized as a team that battles, putting forth maximum effort every time they step on the court. The team has overcome significant injuries to perform at a high level in the early season. We look forward to battling all season!
13 Black Wins Impact Tournament
2/3/2008 — Ginger

This past weekend, 13 Black played in the Impact Volleyball Tournament in Nashville, TN. The girls went undefeated all weekend and cinched the win in their last two matches against TCA 131 (25-10 and 25-13) and Impact 132 (25-16 and 25-8). Way to go 13 Black!
15 Black Wins Southern Draw Tournament
1/28/2008 — Beth

Over MLK weekend, 15-Black opened the season with a first-place finish at the Southern Draw Tournament. The squad defeated Club South 15-1 in a three-game final (25-21, 14-25, 15-13) to become tournament champions. The team dropped only two games the entire weekend, including one game to sister team 15-Blue. All-out dedication and tenacity propelled the team to victory that ended with Mallory Maldino's game-winning net play.
Outside hitter Maldino and rightside Kaylee Kehoe lead the team with standout all-around performances. Backrow play by Brooke Spencer, Jordana Klein, and Collette Richards set the tempo with stellar passing and defense, while Sam Bryan and Kehoe led the offense with impressive setting and defensive efforts. Taylor Gregory and Lydia Marksberry dominated the middle with aggressive blocking and hitting, and Helen Menchinger, Abbie Vickers and Christina Bacallo provided offensive weaponry on the outside and rightside. Additional highlights included tough and consistent serving by Bryan and Kehoe, as well as Gregory's clutch service run in the final stretch of game three of the championship match.
Next up for the team is the Valentine's Day Bash in Birmingham. Congratulations 15-Black on an impressive 2008 season debut!
